Description
Up for auction is a TRUE 1974 Hess split window tanker...in 1973, the US Government passed a law forcing all toys with smallparts to have a warning label printed on the box. Hess had left over split window trucks from 1972, and fire trucks left over from 1970. Since the barrel trucks weren't ready yet, Hess rereleased the two trucks in different markets. With the new law, rather than reprint the boxes, Hess had the plain, white labels made and were sent on rolls to each station. It was then the managers responsibility to affix the stickers on each truck. That is why they're in different places on the box.Contrary to popular belief, the length of the catwalk does NOT matter in the year...there were multiple molds made anbd obviously someone at Marx goofed and the catwalks were off. There are 1972 long AND short catwalks. The ONLY way to tell the year of the truck is by the box.
The truck has many issues...no mirrors hose or stack. The decals have loss. There was a battery that leaked, but with cleaning, I WAS able to get the light working. The front passenger side light is out. The box is really what matters...You can swap out another '72, and have a 1974 as well. The box is in very good chape, just missing the top insert. This comes from a smoke free home.
