Brownish Edge Diving Beetle –
Cybister bengalensis
Order:
Coleoptera
Family:
Dytiscidae
Genus:
Cybister
Distribution: China
Body size: 25 - 38 mm
Body length 25-38 mm, width 16-20mm. Long oval, slightly narrow front, slightly arched back. The back of the black, often with a green luster; upper lip, lip base and the side of the prosthodontic plate and the side of the elytra wing yellow, yellow side of the wings wide at the base than the yellow side of the prosthodontic plate, backward gradually narrow, the end hook-shaped; Coleoptera fold base yellow, slightly black; ventral, hind foot, midfoot thigh brown or black and red.
They live immersed in the streams and ponds. It seems to prefer the standing water of ponds and reservoirs. It is a fierce predator and feeds on other insects, small worms, tadpoles, etc., as does its equally fierce free-swimming larva. Both larva and adult derive their oxygen from the surface of the water, by making periodical visits to the surface. Both are metapneustic in that it is the terminal spiracles that are open and they hang at the surface tail uppermost, and in the adult the air bubble for respiration is held under the elytra.
Bamboo Weevil Snout Beetle –
Cyrtotrachelus longimanus
There are some 18 weevil species attacking bamboo shoots. Both adults and larvae of these weevils feed on shoots, although larvae, which bore holes on bamboo shoots, are responsible for most of the damage. The damage caused by weevils usually results in the death of very young shoots, or deformed and stunted growth of new culms with very closely formed nodes at the feeding site. The larger species are the most common and destructive on sympodial bamboos.
DISTRIBUTION
Bangladesh, China, India, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
HOSTS
Lingnania chungii, Bambusa textilis, B. pervariabilis, Sinocalamus oldhami, Dendrocalamus strictus, D. hamiltonii, Melocanna baccifera
and some other bamboos.
BIOLOGY
Adults are 18-38 mm long and vary in colour from light brown to dark reddish-brown. The legless larvae are cream-white in colour, but turn light brown when they are fully fed. The three species have very similar life cycle and damaging habits. There is only one generation per year, overwintering as adult in cocoons in the soil. Adults and larvae can be found on bamboo shoots from May to early October. The overwintering adults emerge from the soil during spring and summer months when bamboo shoots are available. They feed by sucking sap from the upper part of shoots. Eggs are laid individually in large feeding holes and only 1-3 eggs are deposited on each shoot. The egg-laying site can be identified by a group of fibre sticking out of the shoot surface. The larvae feed and bore inside the bamboo shoots, forming vertical tunnels. They pass through five instars in 12-15 days. Fully fed larvae drop to the ground, burrow into the soil and pupate 2-3 weeks later in cocoons made with soil at 10-30 cm depth. Adults emerge within 15 days after pupation.
They often occur together, is usually found on bamboo species with culms smaller than 4 cm in diameter.
Black Stag Beetle – Dorcus mellianus
Body length: Male:22-33 mm Female:16-21 mm
Distribution: Guangdong and Fujian Province of China (southern China)
Characteristic: A large jaw with body hair is easy to identify. Brown in systemic . Sharp turn in front of the distinctive teeth.
Stag beetles (family Lucanidae, order Coleoptera) are typically large, smooth, and black or reddish brown. Males are larger than females and have greatly enlarged mandibles that may be lined with prominent teeth. These powerful mandibles are used in male-to-male combat over females and are designed to fit around the edges of a rival’s pronotum, with the victor flipping its rival over. Adults are mainly nocturnal and either do not feed or take fluids (plant sap, nectar, or fruit juice). The female lays eggs on decaying tree stumps, roots, or logs. Stag beetle larvae may take several years to complete their development. The larvae pupate inside a cell that is composed of chewed wood fibres. Can be found worldwide in deciduous woodland and forests.
