    Description

    1861 .00 Northwestern Bank (PA) Banknote –
PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ
Offered for your consideration is an intricate and well-executed .00 obsolete banknote, issued a few months after the outbreak of the Civil War. The central vignette depicts a stockyard scene, with two men discussing a large herd of cattle while smoke rises from the chimney of a building behind. Immediately below is the financial obligation, which states that
“THE NORTH WESTERN BANK Will pay FIVE DOLLARS to bearer on demand”
, followed by the city of issue,
    “WARREN”
    , and the date,
    “July 18
    th
    1861”
. The signatures of two bank officials appear at the conclusion, one hand-written (“
    CASHIER
”) and the other printed (“
    PRESIDENT
”). At the upper left is an oval portrait of George Washington, the first president of the United States, while at the lower right is a lovely young lady holding a flower to her chest. The denomination, presented on medallions, appears in the opposite corners. A red
    “FIVE”
protectorate adds color to the area beneath the central vignette. The back, in common with many notes of the era, was left blank.
This note has been professionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as
    “Choice About Unc 58”
    , with the special designation
    “EPQ”
    . The
    “EPQ”
designation is defined on the back of the holder as
    “Exceptional Paper Quality”
. Minor ink corrosion is noted for accuracy, as is the one mark in the lower left corner of the back (see illustration). The edges are irregular, though none of the inner frame-lines are affected (it is close, though). Minor wrinkling of the paper can be seen at the top, probably a prime factor in the assigned grade. The contrast is sharp and bold, highlighted by the colorful protectorate. A nice example of this interesting note and a worthy addition to any Northern currency or general Civil War collection.
